Founded in 1843 by Frederick Stanley in New Britain, Connecticut, The Stanley Works began as a small shop manufacturing bolts, hinges, and hardware. It merged in 1920 with the Stanley Rule & Level Company, established by1857 by Henry Stanley, to dominate the hand tool market.
The firm revolutionized tools with innovations like Bailey planes and the PowerLock tape measure, later merging with Black & Decker in 2010 to become Stanley Black & Decker.

Butt gauges are designed to save time in laying out lines for gaining door butts and doors jambs but are also very handy for knife making
Equipped with three cutters Top, Left and Right locations for butts on casings, butts on doors and the thickness of butts are quickly obtained
The bottom right cutter can be reversed and lengthened so as to permit use of butt gauge working close in inside corners
Perfect for knife making it is ideal for blade grinds, marking centrelines on handle material or tangs
Also great for rabbeted jambs. Can also be used as a marking and mortise gauge and as an inside or outside square for squaring to butt hinge on either door or jambs
In fantastic original vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use
